It was five days before Christmas Day of 1968. To the people of Benicia and nearby Vallejo, California, one particular turnoff on Lake Herman Road was well known as the kind of place where young couples would go to make out. It was dark and isolated enough to afford them a little privacy, set well away from prying eyes. Usually, when two star-crossed lovers wanted to get to know one another a little better, that kind of privacy was a good thing.

David Faraday, 17, and Betty Lou Jensen, 16, however, would prove to be a tragic exception to the rule. Their first date was also their last and marked the first appearance of the Zodiac Killer.

Sometime between ten and eleven o’clock that night, a man approached their parked car in his own vehicle, pulled up alongside their station wagon, then got out and opened fire on the two unsuspecting teenagers. Faraday was shot once, just above the left ear. Jensen was hit five times in her back on the right side, then twice more from the front.

Both victims had gotten out of the car, probably having been forced out at gunpoint. Faraday was shot while just a few feet away from the passenger door. He would be pronounced dead on arrival shortly after an ambulance crew transported him to a nearby hospital. His date for the evening, Betty Lou, had made it some twenty-eight feet from the car before dying, most likely shot while she fled, and was then finished off at the killer’s leisure.
